Plasma Radiation Database (Parade)
Scientific paper
The need for a European plasma radiation database grew from ESA's expanding ambitions for planetary exploration. Studies of possible missions through the 80's and early 90's and the establishment of key programmes such as Huygens led, in part, to the formation of the present Aerothermodynamics Department at ESTEC, and to a series of aerochemistry Technology Research Programme (TRP) studies to establish the state of data, experimental facilities and computational methods available to European Industry to support these ambitious exploration missions. These studies led to a specific TRP for the definition and initial development of a plasma radiation database to support both ground test and flight vehicle design activity. Now with renewed interest in exploration through the vigorous pursuit of the Aurora programme, it is once more appropriate to consider a validated tool for use within ESA member states. This paper gives the historical perspective, PlasmA RAdiation DatabasE Version 1 (PARADE V1) structure, capability and limitations, PARADE V2 status and expected capability, and review the requirements and prospects in roadmap form for development and usage.
