A model of meteor ablation has been developed for small meteors. It includes a model of the fragmentation process and the chemical composition of the meteoroid, which together determine the height at which a meteor will ablate and the light curve, or profile of luminous intensity against time, a meteor will produce. The model is compared to light curves and heights of Leonid meteors observed with image-intensified video. The model will be extended to include the ablation of larger shower meteors that reach below the free molecular flow regime, and to include spectral information.
