The Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER) has been in orbit around the moon aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) since June 2009. The start of its mission coincided with the deepest minimum of solar activity recorded in the space age, and consequently the highest flux of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). The purpose of CRaTER is to measure the linear energy transfer (LET) spectra of energetic particles near the moon, as modified by passage through a plastic analog to human tissue. We have used the Geant4 radiation transport code to model the production of secondary particles from interaction of GCRs with the lunar surface, and the response of CRaTER to these particles. We will present an analysis of the contributions to the CRaTER measurements from the various species of primary GCRs and of secondary particles, given a model of the primary GCR spectra. We will also discuss the extent to which such measurements are representative of "the" LET spectrum, i.e., the idealized spectrum abstracted from the details of the sensor and of the observation conditions, which might for example be used as a specification in the design of radiation shielding.
