In 1994 July, the fragments of Comet Shoemaker?Levy 9 impacted into the atmosphere of Jupiter, producing spectacular dark impact sites. During the following months up to solar conjunction, the dark impact clouds merged to produce a conspicuous dark belt around the impact latitudes. Early morning observations made in 1994 December showed that the impact belt still remained prominent, appearing only second to the NEB in intensity and extending at least half way round the planet. However from the beginning of 1995, the belt began to fade, leaving only a sector lying from ??~ 130 to 220 which may have been derived from the great impact sites K, L, and G. Some rapidly evolving dark streaks were also observed at the impact latitudes during April to July in the sector alongside BC to the GRS. However these features faded away, so that after 1995 July, no distinct impact belt was observed. The intrinsic atmospheric features also showed items of interest during the apparition. The region of STB between the great white ovals BC and FA presented a striking array of alternating anticyclonic and cyclonic white ovals. SEB activity continued but at a lower level to that of the previous apparition. Jetstream spots were observed on the SEBs, and the SEBZ was turbulent just f. the GRS. Otherwise the SEB was quiet. Activity in the northern EZ was complex with only a few features remaining stable throughout the apparition. The Galileo atmospheric probe entered one stable dark NEBs projection in 1995 December. Jetstream spots were again observed on the NTBs and two Little Red Spots were observed in the NNTZ.
