I will describe the current performance of Silicon PIN diodes used for
X-ray timing and spectroscopy. An array of large area Si diodes was
proposed as the main X-ray detector of the Experiment for X-ray Timing
and Relativistic Astrophysics (EXTRA). I will describe the EXTRA
detector concept.
