Calculations have been made of the stability of solid and liquid basalt, S and SO2 in Io's subsurface for conditions appropriate to a range of heat flow and temperature-dependent thermal conductivities of basalt and solid sulfur. The unique rheological characteristics of sulfur imply that, under static conditions, molten subsurface sulfur should effectively exhibit two 'melting points' separated in temperature and depth by very stiff polymerized liquid sulfur.
