Some lunar graben (linear and arcuate rilles) may form as a result of shallow dike intrusion, since the significantly negative buoyancy of lunar basalts in the anorthositic crust means that many dikes stall before reaching the surface. Because the moon exhibits remanent magnetism, shallow dykes are also a potential source of magnetic anomalies near the lunar surface. Using a trace from the Apollo 15 subsatellite showing magnetic field variations between (19 S, 68 W) and (2 N, 44 E), all the graben near the satellite ground track were analyzed using the methods of Head and Wilson (1993) to determine the likelihood that they were formed by shallow intrusions. Three strong candidates were found among the 13 examined, and others are possible.
