There is growing evidence that diffuse material surrounding galaxy disks hold important clues to galaxy formation and evolution. On the one hand, energy input from supernovae could cause gas to be ejected to large scale heights where it could cool and fall back. On the other hand, the low column density regions at the outskirts of galaxy disks are sensitive probes of the extra galactic UV ionizing field. We propose here to use the compact hybrid ATCA configurations to make an extremely deep search for low column density gas around two nearby Sculptor group galaxies, NGC 55 and NGC 300. NGC 55 is close to edge on, has vigorous on going star formation, and is known to have diffuse ionised gas extending several kilo parsecs above the disk plane. NGC 300 has a much more face on inclination, and is an excellent candidate to look for the edge of the neutral disk. Theoretical models predict a sharp truncation at column densities ~ 10^19 cm^-2, but observational confirmation has so far been obtained for only for two galaxies.
