A direct determination of the rotation rate of Europa has been made by measuring the positions of surface features relative to the terminator in a Galileo image, and then comparing the results with similar measurements of the positions of the same features relative to the terminator in a Voyager 2 image that had been taken 17 years earlier. Any prograde rotation relative to the synchronous is less than a few tenths of a degree in 17 years.
