With support from NASA High Energy Astrophysics Division SR&T program, we have started to study the feasibility of high resolution gas time projection chambers (TPCs) for an Advanced Compton Telescope (ACT). The sensitivity goal of a future ACT for nuclear lines astrophysics, as recommended in the last GRAPWG, requires innovative detector approaches with high detection efficiency and multiple background suppression capabilities. We present preliminary Monte Carlo studies of a baseline concept using TPCs filled with low density Xe gas and show initial results from a small prototype development.
