Recent discoveries of acetylene, methane, and ethane in Comet Hyakutake,
C/1996 B2, have led us to investigate these and other hydrocarbons in
irradiated ices of cometary relevance. Laboratory experiments showed
that chemical reactions, particularly those involving H atoms, influence
the C_2H_6:CH_4 ratio in H_2O + hydrocarbon mixtures.
