Ionic charge states of solar energetic particles (SEPs) provide information about their source environment and acceleration process. Recently, some large SEP events have been observed with energy dependent charge states. In these cases, higher energy ions have higher mean charge states. We review observations of events with energy dependent charge states, using data from the ACE, SAMPEX and SOHO spacecraft. Instruments on these spacecraft use various techniques in several energy ranges to measure the ionic charge states of energetic ions. Combining observations from these instruments, the mean iron charge states have been measured for four events over a wide energy range. In these events, the mean Fe charge states increased by 4 to 12 units in the energy range 65 keV/nuc to 47 MeV/nuc. Other events were observed only below 1 MeV/nuc. Some of those were related to flare activity in which there was little known contribution from interplanetary shocks. Others included large interplanetary shocks. All of them displayed energy dependent charge states, even though they were not chosen for that reason. These results will be discussed with respect to models for energy dependent charge states.
