UKIRT observations taken in June of 1999 reveal strong water ice signatures on Uranus' Miranda satellite. The spectra span a wavelength range of 1.0-2.5 μ m, and confirm the existence of a 2.0 μ m water feature previously detected on Miranda. They also show a strong second broad 1.65 μ m crystalline water ice absorption feature and evidence for absorption from other trace constituents. We find the following preliminary values for Miranda's full disk albedos:
Full Disk Albedos λ (μ m) & albedo & σ & λ FWHM
1.25 & 0.237 & 0.018 & 0.16 1.62 & 0.185 & 0.004 & 0.28 1.72 & 0.206 & 0.005 & 0.10 2.20 & 0.165 & 0.005 & 0.40
The early results of spectral modeling will be shown, and we will discuss the implications of these data regarding Miranda's surface chemistry in the context of the formation of the outer solar system.
