Scientific paper

The characteristics of the dust components of the rings of the outer planets are discussed. The dust is created by mechanical impact on larger ring particles and small satellites, by electrostatic forces exerted on dust particles lying on satellite surfaces, and by volcanism on large satellites. The structures of the ring systems of the outer planets are reviewed.
