Results of observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) are reviewed to describe the projected 2D appearance and the 3D geometry of the cloud area. The properties of the red horizontal branch/clump stellar population are examined by means of data from the Cosmos analysis of blue and red UK Schmidt plates. In spite of distortion theorized to result from interaction with the tidal field of the Galaxy, the SMC outer regions project farther in the northern direction than the western direction. The distance and depth of the SMC are examined by means of red versus blue-red color-magnitude diagrams. Large depth (between 12 and 16 kpc) is found in the northeast field, and smaller depths (4-9 kpc) are found in the north and northwestern regions. A projecting structure is identified in the northeast area of the cloud and the origins of the structure are discussed.
