Laboratory polarimetric measurements of mixtures of fine powders (e.g., of MgO and Fe2O3) show a substantial increase in the negative polarization of light as the optical contrast of the microstructure increases. A strong spectral dependence of the inversion angle and the magnitude of the negative polarization Pmin was observed as the degree of contrast varied with wavelength. It is concluded that the spectral dependence of these negative-polarization parameters for the moon, asteroids, and the satellites of large planets can be interpreted as a manifestation of spectral differences in the albedo of the rock and regolith components of these bodies.
