The characteristics of starburst galaxies are summarized, and the
reasons for the bursts of star formation that occur in them are briefly
discussed. The relevance of starburst galaxies for showing how spiral
and elliptical galaxies evolve is addressed. The possible links between
quasars and starburst galaxies are considered.
