The neighbors of the Local Group of galaxies are studied and the possibility that they could have perturbed the two-body motion is explored. The effects of Maffei 1 on the Local Group dynamics are found to dominate, assuming that Maffei 1 is at a distance of 2.1 Mpc from the earth as determined by Buta and McCall (1983). A solution is found to the Local Group dynamics which does not require massive invisible halos in the Milky Way or the Andromeda galaxy. It is suggested that, in this scenario, Maffei is an escaped member of the Sculptor Group which has passed through the Local Group. As a result of the interaction, the Local Group has obtained a peculiar motion of about 66 km/s, which is consistent with the observational results of Richter et al. (1987). The fate of M31's companions during the Maffei encounter is studied. Many companions are dispersed, and the radial velocities of the post-encounter companions are such that all their spectra should show redshifts relative to M31 in almost all cases.
