An analysis of Intercosmos-19 data and other published information is used to develop a model for the vertical electron density distribution in the midlatitude topside ionosphere for daytime summer conditions and a wide range of solar-activity variations (F10.7 = 60-300). The model has the form of an exponential formula where the coefficients and the Nm and Hm parameters depend linearly on solar activity. The model, which covers all the longitude sectors of the globe, makes it possible to calculate the electron density for any level h not less than hm or directly on the basis of the linear dependence of N on F10.7. It is concluded that this model may be used in the further development of the IRI.
