The High Pressure Gas Scintillation Proportional Counter (HPGSPC) is one of the narrow field instruments on board the Italian-Dutch mission for X-ray astronomy, SAX. Sensitive in the hard X-ray domain the HPGSPC has in this band an energy resolution comparable to that of the gas scintillation proportional counter (4% at 60 keV). Exploring the 4-120 keV energy range the HPGSPC will investigate all categories of astrophysical sources emitting in the not yet well studied hard X-ray domain. It will also study in detail the cyclotron features that are present above 10 keV in the X-ray spectrum of many celestial sources. The authors briefly describe the instrument and its characteristics and performance.
