Infrared Galaxies: X-Ray Luminosities
Scientific paper
A dedicated search for X-ray emission from IRAS galaxies on the basis of the IRAS Point Source Catalog and the ROSAT All Sky Survey had suggested the occurrence of abnormally high X-ray luminosities for non-active galaxies. Initial guesses for the copious X-ray emission from apparently normal galaxies included unrecognized active nuclei, starburst products or a combination of the two. In this contribution recent work on these objects is discussed and put into perspective. An attempt is made to identify options for further investigation.
