The authors have defined a sample of X-ray selected narrow emission line galaxies (NELGs) from 5 deep ROSAT fields, and have taken similar objects from the Cambridge-Cambridge ROSAT serendipity survey and the Einstein Observatory extended medium sensitivity survey. For a given optical luminosity, the typical X-ray luminosity of NELGs is about one or two orders of magnitude higher than that of normal galaxies. The ratio of the surface density of NELGs compared with broad line AGN (BLAGN) increases from ≡0.04 at fx ⪆ 6×10-13erg cm-2s-1 to ≡0.1 at fx ⪆ 10-14erg cm-2s-1, suggesting that the surface densities become equal at fx ≡ 10-15erg cm-2s-1. The cosmological evolution rate of NELGs is similar to that of soft X-ray selected BLAGN. The de-evolved (z = 0) XLF in the luminosity range 1041-5×1043erg s-1 (H0 = 50 km s-1Mpc-1; q0 = 0) is steeper than the BLAGN (z = 0) XLF in the same luminosity interval.
