Early-Type Galaxies: X Rays
Scientific paper
The morphological distribution of the 107K, X-ray emitting gas in two early type galaxies with complex, filamentary Hα emission is analyzed in detail and compared to the emission in the Hα line. The X-ray gas shows a structured, asymmetric, often clumpy emission at all scales. Gross similarities are observed between the Hα and X-ray morphologies, although there is not a one-to-one correspondence of the features present. The sample is much too small to allow to draw conclusions and more examples will have to be analyzed before these similarities are interpreted as evidence of a common origin, or a common mechanism, linking the gas at different temperatures.
