Galaxies: X Rays
Scientific paper
Galaxies have been observed and studied in X-rays for the past ≡15 yr. Not surprisingly, they are complex X-ray sources, consisting of populations of bright individual sources (accretion binaries, SNR, SN), increasingly complex gaseous components, and sometimes active nuclei, not to mention the baseline stellar coronal emission. Through X-ray observations there is direct evidence of the chemical and dynamical interaction between galaxies and the surrounding medium; one can observe directly the most massive sources in these galaxies (either super-Eddington accretion binaries or AGN); one can probe into the structure and evolution of E and S0 galaxies.
