The authors discuss the evaluation of the soft X-ray background (SXRB) intensity distribution derived from ROSAT data. The combined analysis of H I 21 cm line and IRAS 100 μm data allows an accurate solution of the radiation transport through the Galactic interstellar medium. The absolute background count rate level is determined by the amount of diffusely distributed Galactic H I, which is not quantitatively represented in the IRAS 100 μm data set. Furthermore, the authors discuss recent ROSAT PSPC results which indicate that the Galactic halo plasma emissivity varies with Galactic latitude. This clearly attributes the distant SXRB component to be located close to the Galaxy.
