The authors analyze mosaiced ROSAT PSPC pointings towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Focused on the area in the south-east of 30 Doradus they verify the existence of an X-ray absorption feature. The ROSAT data imply that the X-ray attenuating material is located in front of the bulk of the X-ray plasma and that there is a difference in hydrogen column density of about NH I = (5.9±2.2)×1021cm-2 between the X-ray bright and dark region. Spectral analysis of the X-ray data suggests the existence of a thermal plasma with a temperature of T = 106.5±0.1K and an emission measure of about 1.0±0.7 cm-6pc. The results indicate that the LMC X-ray plasma is located beyond the bulk of the LMC ISM associated with column densities of about NH ≅ 1.2×1022cm-2. The derived 3-D structure is independently verified by radio continuum observations, because the X-ray shadow is associated with the polarized radio continuum emission of a giant magnetic loop emerging out of the plane of the LMC. Faraday depolarisation implies that this magnetized loop penetrates deep into - or beyond - the LMC. The cloud producing the X-ray shadow appears to have a rather high internal pressure neT = (1.5±0.7)×105cm-3K. The authors suggest that it is magnetically confined and may have been compressed in a magnetic flux tube.
