Am Herculis Stars: X-Ray Sources, Am Herculis Stars: White Dwarfs
Scientific paper
The identification of ≡30 new bright soft RASS X-ray sources as polars (AM Her binaries) has greatly increased the knowledge of this subclass of cataclysmic variables (CVs). Follow-up studies yielded orbital periods, distances, accretion rates, and magnetic field strengths. In several systems, the structure of the surface field deviates substantially from that of a centered dipole. These observations have led to an improved understanding of the evolution of magnetic CVs and of the physics of accretion onto the magnetic white dwarf.
