Star-Forming Regions: Young Stars, Young Stars: X Rays
Scientific paper
The Cha III region is part of the large and relatively nearby (≡150 pc) dark cloud complex in Chamaeleon. Whereas a lot of publications based on a broad range of wavelengths and techniques have been devoted to the star-forming activity in Cha I and II, Cha III gained only marginal interest. As compared to the two former regions it seemed to be devoid of sources indicative of ongoing star formation. On the basis of an ESO-Schmidt objective-prism survey for Hα emission line objects, a deep ROSAT PSPC image centred at T Cha, follow-up optical spectroscopy, and NIR photometry, ongoing star formation is demonstrated in Cha III, too. A state-of-the-art source detection procedure revealed nearly 50 X-ray sources at a high confidence level in the T Cha field. The sources are considered to be low-mass YSOs. There are indications that Cha III is at somewhat larger distance than Cha I and II.
