The numbers of massive stars available for producing heavy elements in systems having different stellar mass functions are investigated. From considerations of the yield it is concluded that the correlation observed by McClure et al. between metallicity and steepness of the mass functions for globular clusters could possibly be explained through self metal enrichment of protocluster clouds. Metal-poor clusters produced in protoclouds with steep mass functions could have been enriched to their present abundances without substantial mass loss. Protoclouds with flat stellar mass functions produce more than enough heavy elements to enrich themselves to the abundances of the metal-rich globular clusters and may lose some fraction of these heavy elements in mass loss. Alternatively, the yield in such clusters may have been modified either by a steepening in the slope of the mass function at the high-mass end or by a severe high-mass cutoff.
