The authors report spectrophotometric observations of a previously uncataloged 17th magnitude hot DA white dwarf. The object was found during a search for an optical counterpart to a serendipitously detected weak X-ray source observed by the Einstein Observatory. Simple models can reproduce the visible spectrum if the star has log g = 8.0±0.5 and Teff = 22500±2000K. The implied distance is ≡200 pc. Although published model atmospheres in this regime do not extend to X-ray wavelenghts, the authors argue that it is plausible that photospheric emission from this star is responsible for the observed X-ray source. This would be of considerable interest, as objects such as these are far more common than the handful of extremely hot DA stars currently detected in X-rays. The authors also present spectrophotometry of the hotter DA star GD 257 (=Gr 289), a known X-ray source for which published spectra are rare.
