The present evaluation of space science program prospects following the resumption of space launches based on expendable launch vehicles notes that a substantial requirement will remain for a space station staging base and robotic assembly facilities for astronaut oversight and maintenance. Such facilities are especially necessary for the on-orbit assembly of space optical and radio telescope (and interferometric) systems of increasingly greater size. A space-based laser interferometer for the detection of gravitational waves may consist of three spacecraft bearing the three optical end stations, with the entire system orbiting the sun with a one-year period. In optical telescopy, multimirror telescope arrays are under consideration which will yield images 100 times sharper than those of the Hubble Space Telescope.
