Simultaneous measurements of OH Meinel bands in the Delta v = 2 sequence and the Infrared Atmospheric System of O2 in the night are used to study the production mechanisms of the O2(a1 Delta sub g). The fraction of the emission that comes from the slow decay of the very high daytime O2(a1 Delta sub g) concentration is studied. In order to explain the observed profile, a photochemical scheme is developed. Direct recombination of atomic oxygen with an efficiency of 0.75 is shown to be the most important source of O2(a1 Delta sub g) during the night. The oxidation of vibrationally excited OH at levels v = 1-4 can only be responsible for a small fraction of the observed profile.
