The Palomar Asteroid and Comet Survey (PACS), which ended in December, 1994, after acquiring approximately 26,000 films on the 18-inch Schmidt telescope at Palomar Observatory, discovered 44 new near-Earth asteroids, 67 Mars crossers, 47 Jupiter Trojans, and many other asteroids of unusual motion. Also found were 33 new comets, of which 16 are periodic. The discoveries of the PACS have provided a basis for estimating the current rate of impact cratering on Earth as well as on other solid bodies of our solar system. The discovery in the program of Comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 provided to the world a graphic illustration of the fact that interplanetary wanderers do, indeed, collide with planets.
