In this paper the authors want to call observers' attention to the fact that atmospheric instabilities are able to distort, through both image motion and the angle-of-arrival variation of incident light beams, the signal that carries information on solar velocity fields. This effect manifests itself in a modulation of the instrument spectral response and eventually leads to Doppler-velocity signal fluctuations which are indistinguishable from true ones. Crude quantitative estimates are made of such errors inherent in birefringent filters and Fabry-Perot interferometers.
