The pulsar PSR 1055-52 is of interest because it is one of the rare radio pulsars with an X-ray counterpart. A deep optical study of its field, carried out with the EFOSC instrument at ESO, shows no evidence for an optical counterpart down to mb ≡ 23.5. Spectroscopy and photometry of the faint stars near the radio/X-ray position rule out all possible candidates. Implications on the object's Lx/Lbol and in general on its nature are discussed.
