Gravitational focusing of radiation passing a dense mass produces a long thin region of high flux density from a single bright source. If the dark mass is at rest in an H II region, a bright spike should appear behind it. The dimensions of such spikes have been calculated for blue stars, novae, and supernovae in hydrogen clouds of various densities for masses of stellar and galactic sizes. The effects of relative motions are estimated. It is found to be barely possible that H II spikes will reveal intergalactic hydrogen, or collapsed galaxies, or other unobservable masses, under favorable circumstances.
