The stability of a slowly rotating star with a weak meridional magnetic field relative to the excitation of torsional oscillations having a large number of radial nodes is considered. It is proposed that the oscillation period is much longer than the rotational period. It is shown that thermal exchange in zones with a superadiabatic temperature gradient facilitates the self-excitation of torsional perturbations. A comparison is made between the latitudinal dependences of some torsional modes and those observed on the sun by LaBonte and Howard (1982).
