Nebulae: Supernova Remnants, Spectrophotometry
Scientific paper
We present optical imaging and spectroscopic data for the faint galactic supernova remnant 3C 400.2. A deep CCD image of the southwestern region obtained with an Hα + [N II] interference filter shows a complex morphology with many chaotic filaments and considerable diffuse emission. A comparable exposure in the north-central region, centered on the brightest X-ray emission, shows faint, diffuse optical emission probably belonging to the remnant. Spectra of two of the optical filaments in the southwest indicate strong [N II], [S II], and [O I] emission lines relative to Ha, characteristic of shock-heated gas. The electron densities determined from the ratio of [S II] λ6717 and λ6731 at our two positions indicate a real variation is present. However, the range of pressures indicated for the optical filaments is still consistent with rough pressure equilibrium between the X-ray and optical gas.
