A few examples of prolonged (up to 10 h in duration) steady magnetospheric convection (SMC) are studied here. The plasma and magnetic field measurements on board the ISEE-1 spacecraft (at X at about -20 earth radii near its apogee) displayed the stable plasma sheet (PS) configuration and steady earthward plasma convection that are essential elements of SMC episodes. Among the observed properties of the steadily convecting PS, the following details are emphasized: (1) signatures of a concentration of the earthward convection to the central sector of the near-equatorial tail region (convection jet phenomenon), where the plasma content of the unit flux tube seems to be reduced; (2) enhanced Bz component of the magnetic field in that sector; (3) a limited radial extent of the pressure-dominated portion of the PS in that sector; and (4) a large component of the cross-tail convection directed toward the flanks within the PS (comparable to the earthward component). A conceptual model is advanced to explain the observations, including the observed stability of the convecting magnetotail which contradicts some of the conclusions of past theoretical studies. Its key element is a convection jet generated by the magnetic reconnection in the far magnetotail, which thereafter produces the azimuthal plasma flows in the pressure-dominated region.
