The effect of neutron absorption by heavy nuclei on the distribution of neutron velocities in stellar interiors is investigated. It is shown that, during later phases of stellar evolution, when the stellar core consists primarily of heavier nuclei such as 28Si, this effect can result in a significant deviation from the usually assumed Maxwellian spectrum of velocities. This in turn, can lead to order of magnitude revisions in the nucleosynthesis rates of some neutron induced reactions.
