Historical: Planetary Observation, Mercury, Biography: Schiaparelli, G.V.

The determination of the rotation period of Mercury was wrongly established by Giovanni V. Schiaparelli in 1889. In the following 75 years his value has been confirmed more than once, until the true period was discovered, thanks to radar techniques, in 1965. In this work some conjectures regarding the causes of this historical mistake are presented. The paper focuses on the work of the Italian astronomer.
