Scientific paper
Relativistic tidal accelerations associated with gravitationally collapsed configurations are studied. Simple energy arguments are presented that provide a heuristic interpretation of black-hole tidal fields. This interpretation cannot be extended to a complex collapsed configuration involving intrinsic quadrupole and higher multipole moments; the possible astrophysical relevance of such a system is briefly discussed.
