This year Mars will be at opposition on August 28 (at declination (15° 49() and the planet will culminate at 23° altitude over London, much higher than in 2001, but still low enough for differential colour to be noticeable. But if you use a yellow, orange or red filter (try a Wratten 15, 25 or 29) you can reduce this effect, and at the same time you will enhance the contrast of the dark, so-called albedo features on Mars.
