Data from the Massachusetts-Stony Brook Galactic Plane CO Survey are analyzed to determine the detailed distribution of molecular (H2) gas in the first quadrant of the Galactic disk. In the inner Galaxy, the near-far distance ambiguity is resolved by exploiting the different angular extents of gas at the near and far locations. The resulting maps of the molecular hydrogen volume density, gas-layer thickness, and centroid offset from b = 0° were plotted as continuous color images with 300 pc mean resolution. The distribution of cataloged giant H II regions was compared with the face-on molecular hydrogen distribution. The H II regions are strongly correlated with the dense molecular rings: the H II region volume density exhibits a quadratic dependence on local H2 gas density. This strong correlation is then used to assign the distances to 50 H II regions with previously ambiguous distances.
