A preliminary, two-part survey of the outer solar system has been carried out by searching for slow-moving objects (apparent opposition motion equal to or less than 10 arcsec/hr) using two Schmidt telescopes and a 1.3 m telescope equipped with a charge-coupled-device (CCD) camera. Objects as faint as 24th magnitude were imaged with the CCD. The survey yields empirical 99 percent confidence limits to the projected surface density of objects in the outer solar system of S less than 0.017/sq deg for mV equal to or less than 20, and S less than 15/sq deg for mR equal to or less than 24. The survey and the derived limits are discussed.
