The authors carried out joint stellar and nebular studies of a few adjacent stellar associations in the Magellanic Clouds. After a brief summary of theoretical results on massive star evolution and their diversity, they emphasize the spread of ages of Wolf-Rayet stars of different subtypes, deduced from their environment, and how they can be used as a secondary age indicator. A short study of the environment of S Dor type stars in the LMC follows. The authors carry out a detailed study of three star forming regions (two in the Large Magellanic Cloud, one in the Small Magellanic Cloud) inside which a sequence in ages is made conspicuous. The discussion points out a few traps in age determination from integrated properties of a star cluster or from its brightest stars. New methods are proposed, primarily based on the study of the environment and especially its nebular characteristics. Results from this kind of study applied to S Dor type stars are discussed.
