A team from NASA's Ames Research Center recently conducted two flight tests of prototype aircraft which are representative in size and configuration of airplanes that could be delivered to Mars during launch opportunities in the next decade. The aircraft were carried aloft with balloons into Mars-like atmospheric temperature and density conditions (≈30 Km) and dropped nose-first to attain flight speed. One flight was 100% successful while the other was terminated early by breakup of the airframe structure. The lessons learned from this flight test program are presented, with emphasis on their impact on mission and system design. In particular, practical deployment scenarios, propulsion system characteristics, range, speed, and payload mass fraction are discussed.
