A campaign was held in April 2002 that collected worldwide neutral wind measurements of the upper atmosphere during a geomagnetic storm event. The ground based network of Medium Frequency and Meteor Radars covered low, middle and high latitudes during the entire month. The TIDI instrument aboard the TIMED spacecraft obtained neutral wind observations from orbit for the same period. The ground based and space based data sets are coincident for mesospheric and lower thermospheric altitudes, approximately 80 to 100 km. These data provide information relating to the terrestrial impact of the energetic chain of events that originated with a series of X- and M-class solar flares and associated coronal mass ejections. This paper will describe the background tidal behaviour in the neutral winds for April 2002 and high latitude changes that occurred during the geomagnetic storm period on April 17, 2002. The wind observations exhibit great complexity suggesting that diurnal and semi-diurnal tides are being modulated by planetary waves. Orbital measurements by TIDI support the conclusions obtained from ground based observations. In addition, TIDI data provide a fuller global context for interpreting the winds observed by the ground based CEDAR network.
