In the context of ground based observations in the infrared range and the Giotto and Vega space missions to Comet Halley, the following are discussed: the location of the ices, the nature and distribution of dust grains, and the characterization of parent molecules. The best conditions for determining the location of ices include observations beginning at a heliocentric distance greater than 2.5 AU, a field of view not exceeding approximately 3 arcsec, a spectral resolution lambda/Delta lamdba of approximately 50, and detection at the 3 micron band. A photometer is discussed that will be able to record the cometary spectrum between 1.5 and 20 microns on 5 points of the coma simultaneously, with a resolution of 3 to 5 arcsec and a spectroscopic resolution of about 100. Concerning the parent moelcules, it is recommended that interferometry or heterodyne spectroscopy from an airborne observatory be conducted, and CO, NH3, and C2H2 are determined to be optimum candidates for ground detection.
