A detailed chemical network involving nearly 200 gas-phase reactions and more than 20 grain surface reactions has been used to describe the chemistry of 95 species in dense interstellar clouds. The network is chosen so as to study the chemistry of sulfur- and silicon-bearing species in some detail. It is found that direct formation on grains is an important production mechanism for many species while for others grain reactions have indirect effects which can dominate the formation processes.
